Google’s Phone app for Android will soon tell you why a business is calling you. In its latest move to give anonymous spam and marketing calls a modern, technological makeover. The search engine company is developing a feature called Verified Calls. Through this program, Google will allow businesses to verify their identities and display their name and the purpose of reaching out on the incoming call screen.
Phone App Help
According to Google’s support page, Verified Calls is a feature that helps users learn more about incoming calls before answering. Unlike call screening, which can be initiated by the user on any incoming call. Verified Calls only come from businesses that have gone through Google’s approval process. When a call that meets the criteria is placed from an approved business, the user will see the business name and logo, as well as the reason for the call.
How it works
The feature is switched on by default, but it won’t work if you haven’t added your phone number to your Google Account. It also won’t work if you don’t have the Google Phone app, which still isn’t compatible with a lot of Android devices, including Samsung phones. You can switch the feature off if you always pick up regardless of whether or not you know who’s calling. Or in case you have privacy concerns.
Google says “the feature doesn’t collect or store any personally identifiable information after verification”. Though, and that the company deletes your phone number and the call reason from the Verified Calls server minutes after verification.
Receiving an unknown incoming call can cause anxiety, and features like this help to reduce some of that pressure. If you know who’s calling and why, you’re able to make an informed decision on if you want to pick up the call, and how you’ll greet the caller when you answer. It sounds like a unique improvement to the calling experience that could prove useful if enough businesses actually take advantage of it. We haven’t been able to test the feature yet, but the live support page suggests you could start getting verified calls any time now.
